Brussels Airlines extends The Loft at Brussels Airport with Lexus

The Loft by Brussels Airlines is a unique lounge concept at Brussels Airport, centered on comfort, technology, design and Belgitude. Since its inauguration in October 2014, The Loft welcomed more than 1.5 million travelers departing from Pier A at Brussels Airport.

Today the airline increases the capacity of ‘The Loft’ with 66% to a total of 2040 m², making it possible to welcome 500 travelers. But next to more physical space, The Loft now offers also new innovative experiences, for which Brussels Airlines has partnered up with quality brands Lexus.

The additional 800m² include an open space designed and hosted by Lexus, showcasing objects from the Lexus design awards, letting guests discover the brand’s luxury lifestyle.

The space has been created following the traditions of omotenashi, the Japanese concept of hospitality and one of the core values of Lexus. Omotenashi goes further than just meeting an individual’s needs; it is about anticipating them before they arise. Lexus ambassadors make sure guests are provided with the best possible service while they wait for their flight.

Credit to Corian Design Solid Surface, the ambitious vision for a seamless surface design of The Loft was turned into a reality and completes the entire atmosphere.

The new Loft also offers an enclosed VIP area for HON Circle members  with a living room showcasing a changing art collection of foreign and Belgian art. Next to that, an array of the finest gastronomy in a state of the art Miele kitchen is offered to make travelers feel at home away from home.

The Loft also offers private nap rooms, inspired by the new long haul Business Class cabin that the airline will launch at the end of this year. They showcase fine art images produced by cultural engineering agency Meta-Morphosis. Each artwork has a link to Belgium. A massage area completes the experience; thanks to Panasonic relax chairs, simulating the Shiatsu treatment available in the seating of the new Lexus LS sedan. Another new experience includes the Grohe Spa, consisting of 11 bathrooms, each with their own settings according to personal preference, steam bath, music and light therapy, creating 11 unique moods and spa experiences. A game room featuring an impressive red velvet pool table concludes The Loft’s new experiences, letting Loft guests come together to play a game of pool.

On board as well as on the ground, Brussels Airlines wants to be an ambassador for Belgium.  Therefore the ‘Belgitude’ is omnipresent in The Loft. This translates into the Art Nouveau design of the lounge, the many historical items from the Tintin universe and also the gastronomy. Belgian culinary delights are provided by caterer Newrest, while Belgian family-owned company Rombouts provides a daily dose of traditionally roasted premium coffee. Neuhaus’ chocolates give The Loft’s international audience an indulgent taste of Belgium and the beers from AB InBev complement the offer at the Belgian Bar, where lounge guests can pull their own draft beer.

How the digital Industry has changed lives

Technologies have changed the developing world, whether it’s the world of work as seen by the so-called ‘millennials’ or the different technological perspectives of various cultures and generations.

According to futurist and innovation expert, Paul Papadimitriou, the third industrial revolution has changed lives and businesses from how we learn to how we  buy – and how the speed of change can overwhelm, distract and excite in equal measure.

Speaking at the 5th edition of the Digital Dialogue conference, a thought-leadership platform facilitated by MultiChoice to foster a better understanding of the future of video entertainment industries, Papadimitriou shared his outlook on the key signifiers in the crowded digital space.

According to Papadimitriou, what separates us as humankind is the fact that we create tools and stories: “The tools (technology) have always been with us. Technology affects us, our behaviors, how we transact, communicate ideas, gather ideas, love, and consider the world.  To prosper in a world that moves and change so fast, we need to get back to our basics, the fire around which we gather and the stories we tell”.

To this end, the understanding of the future of pay TV is influenced by global numbers and the transition to being multi-modal and multi-local. As such, the current challenge for pay-TV companies is to shift the focus from content delivery systems to understanding its consumer through primary data.

Papadimitriou remarked that the way consumers watch TV has evolved whether it’s bitesize formats to non-linear viewing such as watching multiple content on multiple screens.  “With the advent of 5G, African consumers will be able to watch TV on all platforms simultaneously”.

Uganda’s private sector growing steadily

Recently, Stanbic Bank’s purchase managers index posted 51.8 in April, down from 53.2 in March signaling a further improvement in the health of the Ugandan private sector. However, the pace of growth fell below the average observed across the series so far since June 2016.

According to the PMI report, Business conditions in Uganda’s private sector witnessed further increases in output and new orders, which subsequently led to an expansion in workforce numbers. Furthermore, purchasing activity rose for the second month in succession. Meanwhile, inflationary pressures persisted as rising cost burdens fuelled output price inflation.

The onset of the rainy season as well as the recent developments in the Oil and Gas sector have driven expansion in Agriculture and Construction sectors respectively. However, there has been pressure on the UGX against the dollar trading above the 3,700 mark as at the end of April, amid demand from commercial banks and the energy sector. This led to the slowdown in the services and industrial sectors.

Stanbic Bank’s Fixed Income Manager Benoni Okwenje said, “Staffing levels increased boosted by heightened client demand and planned business expansions. Employment rose across three out of the five sub-sectors, the exceptions being industry and wholesale & retail where respective stagnation and contraction were seen. Businesses further responded to higher demand by expanding their purchasing activity for the second consecutive month. Meanwhile, competition among suppliers led average lead times for inputs to shorten further during April.”

Elsewhere, higher raw material prices underpinned an increase in cost burdens in the period under review. Overall input costs rose across all five monitored sub-sectors, continuing the trend observed since the survey’s inception. Accordingly, businesses across the five monitored sub-sectors increased their average selling prices at the start of the second quarter.

The Stanbic PMI is a composite index, calculated as a weighted average of five individual sub-components, New Orders (30%), Output (25%), Employment (20%), Suppliers’ Delivery Times (15%) and Stocks of Purchases (10%). Readings above 50.0 signal an improvement in business conditions on the previous month, while readings below 50.0 show deterioration.

PRI & House of DJs to work together on plastic collections at Zone 7

Plastic Recycling Industries announced a plastic waste collection drive with Kampala’s most popular weekly entertainment event Shisa Nyama Saturdays. Under the partnership, Plastic Recycling Industries will provide plastic collection equipment at Zone 7, a popular restaurant, bar and lounge that hosts Shisa Nyama every Saturday.

The Shisa Nyama event and Zone 7 generate a large amount of used plastics weekly and committed to ensure these plastics are diverted from landfills and sent to Plastic Recycling Industries for recycling instead.

Coca-Cola Beverages Africa Public Affairs & Communications Director Simon Kaheru thanked House Of DJs, organizers of Shisa Nyama, and Zone 7 Management for being responsible about environmental conservation.

“We are happy to create more partnerships and invite more event’s organizers and hospitality outlets to take the initiative and join us in ridding the environment of plastic waste,” Kaheru said.

“It is also gratifying that we are growing partnerships in plastic waste collection within the lifestyle-‘feel good moments’ category, which gives us the opportunity to sensitize revelers about waste segregation in a fun, casual environment,” he added.

Zone 7 Director Lotani Kagwa said the commitment to collect plastic waste was long term.

“We have always been concerned about plastic waste being disposed wrongly and ending up in soil and in drainage. We have designated an area where we will collect plastics and separate them from other types of waste. Every week we will ensure that the Plastic Recycling Industries Team can collect them easily and recycle them,” he said.

House Of DJs Manager Afsa Umutesi said the campaign was timely and would go a long way in changing the events management landscape.

“We are happy to form this partnership because it makes a major contribution to keeping Uganda clean and also protecting our environment. As event managers we must demonstrate responsibility by actually doing the right things. Eventually we will extend this collaboration to all events that we host and organize,” she said.

As Coca-Cola Beverages Africa (CCBA), driving the initiative to collect plastics and help conserve the environment is vital to the quality of life of all communities in Uganda.

The philosophy behind Plastic Recycling Industries (PRI) is to take plastic waste out of the environment, reduce it, and re-use it as valuable products. While doing so, we not only protect the environment, but also create jobs for youth and women from underprivileged backgrounds who have found a livelihood in waste collection.

The Coca-Cola Company recently announced a new global packaging strategy and recommitted a “World Without Waste”.

In Uganda, Coca-Cola Beverages Africa Uganda is committed to achieve the 100% collection target ahead of 2030.

“At Coca-Cola Beverages Africa Uganda, we are cognizant of the fact that for a Country to have a successful recycling program, it takes collective effort of several stakeholders. On this note, I would like to appreciate our partners KCCA and Masaka Recycling Initiative in walking with us on this journey. As PRI, we are ready to work with KCCA to put collection points at all public concerts and events going forward,” Kaheru said.

Commenting about the culture of waste disposal, PRI Manager Edward Kalenzi said, “One of the biggest challenges we face today is the belief that somebody else will clean up after us. We are continuing to disseminate information about disposing plastic responsibly. Lets take the message and apply it now in our homes and work places.”
